SBC launches 40/40 Prayer Vigil leading up to 2008 election

NASHVILLE, Tenn., September 3, 2008—Southern Baptists and other Christians are being encouraged to participate in 40 days of prayer for spiritual revival and national renewal this fall.

The “40/40 Prayer Vigil,” which is cosponsored by the Southern Baptist Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission (ERLC) and North American Mission Board (NAMB), is an invitation for individuals, families and churches to pray for themselves, the country and its public officials in the days and hours leading to the November election. More than 1,400 churches and individuals already have committed to participate in the vigil.

The effort, which will begin Sept. 24 and conclude Nov. 2, consists of 40 days of prayer that intensifies to 40 hours of prayer to complete the vigil.
“Our problems are God-sized problems,” ERLC President Richard Land said. “They are problems of the heart. They are problems of the spirit. They are problems of the soul. And they are well beyond our ability to solve them. The only way they are going to be solved is if we have revival.

“If we’re going to have a revival that will deepen into an awakening and become a reformation--and I believe that’s what we must have in America--it starts with each of us in our own hearts and in our own families and in our own churches and in our own communities,” Land said.

The ERLC and NAMB have provided an online prayer guide to aid people as they pray for such needs as revival in their lives and churches, a restoration of morality in the culture and wisdom for voters in this year’s election. The prayer guide may be accessed and downloaded at ilivevalues.com/prayer.

The Southern Baptist Convention is America’s largest non-Catholic denomination with more than 16.2 million members. The Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission is the SBC’s ethics, religious liberty and public policy agency with offices in Nashville, Tenn., and Washington, D.C.
